Brave and loyal, the breed not only makes a great companion but a good watch dog too, always willing to protect its family in the face of danger.
The Norwegian Buhunds Beginnings The Norwegian Buhund is a very old breed of dog and was a favourite of the Vikings thousands of years ago. Excavation of a Viking grave in Norway, which is thought to date back to the year 900, revealed not only the skeletons of humans but also skeletons of six dogs. It was a tradition amongst the Vikings that when one of their tribe died that person's most cherished possessions were buried alongside them. This was done so that these possessions could be used in the afterlife and, in the case of the Norwegian Buhund, they were to protect their master. The Development of the Norwegian Buhund The Norwegian Buhund that we see today was most likely developed in Norway on the rainy western coastlines. Here the dog's duties were to guard farmhouses and to herd cattle and sheep. This is where the breed got its name. The word Bu in Norwegian means homestead or mountain hunt and so the breed was named using this word. The breed was very highly thought of and, in the 1920s, the first dog show dedicated to the Norwegian Buhund was held. Following this, the first Norwegian Buhund club was established in 1939. Today the breed is popular throughout its homeland but not widely known outside of it, although its population continues to grown year on year. A friendly, loyal dog that will perform well as a working breed or as a pet, the Norwegian Buhund is a wonderful dog for all.
