The Burgos Pointing Dog has been around since the 16th century on the Iberian Peninsula. This area of Portugal is thought to be the birth place of many European pointing breeds and the Burgos Pointing Dog is a large pointer which has been used in the development of other pointing breeds. Its influence can be seen in the Large French Pointer but also in smaller pointers that are still around today.
The Burgos Pointing Dog itself is thought to be a descendent of the Spanish scenthound breed, the Sabueso Espanol, and the Old Spanish Pointer. Today, the Burgos Pointing Dog is a smaller version of what it once was; this is as a result of breeders through the years trying to hone its ability as a bird hunting dog.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Burgos Pointing Dog was close to extinction. However, since then the Burgos Pointing Dog has experienced a boom in popularity. Spanish breeders and hunters are rediscovering the breed's many positive qualities and it is beginning to spread around the country again.
